EFA: I’d like to talk with you about yourselves. Could you present yourselves to our listeners, please?
António: Yes, of course! I’m António, I’m 81 years old and I’m a basket maker.
José: And I’m José Rui, I’m 38 years old and I’m a jeweller.
EFA: What’s your workplace?
António: I work at home.
José: And I work at home too.
EFA: And what do you really do all day?
António: I make wicker baskets, bottle coverings and other things with wicker.
José: I make rings, necklaces and other pieces of jewellery...
EFA: What kind of materials do you work with?
António: Well, I use wicker, oak, cane of India and cherry tree.
José: I use silver and gold.
EFA : Do you have to wear some kind of uniform at work?
António: Only an overall?
José: Me too.
EFA: What are your professional prospects?
António: My professional prospects aren’t very good.
José: Mine are medium.

Peter: Hello! My name is Peter. I’m 42 years old and I’m a cook. I work at a restaurant in Av. Hans Isler,
Lousada.
John: Hi! I’m John. I’m 38 years old and I’m a jeweller. I work in my shop.
Gabrielle: And what do you really do all day?
Peter: I cook meals and desserts.
John: I make jewels, rings and so on...
Gabrielle: Do you have to wear some kind of uniform at work?
Peter: I have to wear a white gown and cap, special gadgets and tools –pans, pots, knives and spoons...
John: I don’t have to wear anything special.
Gabrielle: So, are those your identification marks?
Peter: Yes, I’d say so.
John: As I told you, I have no uniform nor identification marks. Only the final product coming from my hands identifies me.
Gabrielle: Do you have a safety code or a set of safety rules you must follow?
John: I have to be careful with the hot solder.
Peter: I must be careful handling the knives and the stove not to get hurt nor cause food poisoning.
Gabrielle: What about your professional prospects? How would you classify them?
Peter: Excellent! I’m a famous cook. Many restaurants want me to be the Chef.
John: Very good. People admire and respect my work everywhere.

Luis: Hello! My name is Luis. I’m 32 years old. I’m a judge. I work at the Court House, in our neighbour city, Felgueiras.
Miguel: Hello! I‘m Miguel. I’m 33 years old and I’m a policeman. And I work at the Police Station in Lousada.
Mário: And what do you really do all day?
Luis: I spend the day looking at legal files because I’m analyzing people. This job is too difficult.
Miguel: I take care of the security of all the people. Sometimes this is very difficult because there are lots of dishonest people.
Mário: Do you have to wear any kind of uniform at work?
Luís: Well, I have to wear a black gown over my clothes.
Miguel: As for me, I wear a nice uniform. There are many pockets on it…. To hold the pens I must keep at hand. And I have to carry a gun too.
Mário: So, are those your identification marks?
Luís: Yes, I’d say so…
Miguel: Yeah, the guns identify us s policemen.
Mário: Do you have any safety code, or a set of safety rules you must follow?
Luís: Well, I must follow a lot of rules because I’ judging people. It’s a huge responsibility!
Miguel: I must follow a lot of safety rules too, for me and for my colleagues. It’s a dangerous job!
Mário: What are your professional prospects? How would you classify them?
Luís: Mine are excellent! I’m studying a lot to pass to another level, the High Supreme Court of Law.
Miguel: Well, I earn quite a good salary. Just like the other branches of the armed forces, we change of professional category and get raised every four or six years, but our wages also follow the yearly raises established for everybody. I’ll reach the top of my career when I’m 65… if I’m not killed before by a burglar!!
Mário: We sincerely hope not!!
Miguel: Yeah! Me too!

Silvio: I spend all day cooking meals.
Gabrielle: Do you have to wear some kind of uniform at work?
Silvio: I wear a white gown and cap.
Gabrielle: So, are those your identification marks?
Silvio: Some of them. I also use special gadgets and tools – pans, pots, knives and spoons…
Gabrielle: Do you have a safety code or a set of safety rules you must follow?
Silvio: I must handle carefully the knives and the stove not to get hurt nor cause food poisoning. For that I also need to have clean looks, specially my gown and hands, as well as clean tools and place of work.

À conversa com José Teixeira, que exerce o ofício de tamanqueiro desde muito jovem
No dia 4 de Março, a turma EFA B3 escolar da escola Secundária de Lousada dirigiu-se a casa do Sr. José Teixeira, mais conhecido por “Zequinha”, 67 anos, Natural de Nogueira, residente em Cristelos mas a exercer o seu ofício em Pias, Concelho de Lousada.
Recebeu-nos na sua pequena oficina onde executa, com muita paixão e dedicação, vários modelos de tamancos, chancas e socos, arte que exerce há já 50 anos e que teima em manter viva, pelo menos enquanto as forças lhe assistirem.
Fomos conhecê-lo melhor e aqui fica o registo de uma longa e agradável conversa.
TURMA EFA- Há quanto tempo se dedica a este ofício?
Comecei a praticar este ofício aos 17 anos, em Casais, a trabalhar por conta de outrem, numa empresa que fazia este tipo de artigos. Foi lá que aprendi esta arte e tudo o que com ela se prende. Aí, trabalhei cerca de 13 anos. Depois, a empresa resolveu mudar de ramo e optei por trabalhar numa outra, em Lousada. Apesar desta arte já ter pouco prestígio social na altura, sempre trabalhei com gosto e sempre gostei do que fazia.
TURMA EFA- É uma arte que já vem de família?
Não. Posso dizer que, na minha família, o único que seguiu este ofício fui eu. Na altura, precisava de trabalhar e surgiram duas hipóteses: ou ia para tamanqueiro ou para alfaiate.
Como os tamancos eram artigos que se vendiam muito, enveredei por este ofício.
TURMA EFA- Quais os artigos que faz e quais os que lhe dão mais gosto fazer?
Faço diferentes tipos de tamancos: o tamanco rebelo, o tamanco baixo, o tamanco de chinela, os socos de rapaz, os socos de menina, os carolinos de menina e as chancas.
Faço qualquer um com o mesmo gosto, não tenho preferência.
TURMA EFA- Quais os materiais que costuma trabalhar e quais são os seus preferidos? Porquê?
Trabalho com vários materiais: pele de boi, pele de verniz que hoje em dia foi substituída por uma pele sintética que se lhe assemelha e o crufe. A base, ou seja, a planta do tamanco é feita com pau de amieiro. O material mais fácil de trabalhar é a pele sintética porque é mais mole e maleável. A pele de boi é mais dura.
TURMA EFA- Que quantidade de objectos consegue fazer por dia?
Depende dos modelos e do facto do material a utilizar na elaboração dos tamancos estar pronto ou não. Por exemplo, se forem tamancos de senhora, consigo fazer dez pares por dia. Se estivermos a falar de tamancos rebelos só já consigo fazer cinco ou seis pares.
TURMA EFA- Consegue fazer desta actividade a sua única fonte de rendimento?
Esta sempre foi a minha actividade e sempre consegui viver dela. Claro que antigamente era um artigo muito mais procurado e que se venda mais. Era o único calçado que havia. Depois, com o passar dos anos, deixou de se vender em tão grandes quantidades. Actualmente vende-se muito pouco, só já aos agricultores, e é mais no tempo da chuva. Como sou conhecido, vou tendo clientes certos que me fazem algumas encomendas, entre eles um feirante, que já é dos poucos, senão o único, a ter tamancos à venda, na sua tenda.
TURMA EFA- Costuma participar em feiras ou exposições de artesanato?
Nunca participei em feiras ou exposições de artesanato porque não me sinto motivado para tal. Se me vierem cá pedir material para exporem, cedo-o com todo o gosto, mas não vou para lá expor.
TURMA EFA- O que acha desses eventos?
Acho bem que haja estas iniciativas mas não participo nelas. É bom para os mais jovens, para divulgarem o que fazem e dar algum prestígio ao artesanato, que começa a cair no esquecimento. No meu caso, já estou com uma certa idade e, para além disso, a minha arte tem os dias contados…
TURMA EFA- Já ensinou a sua arte a alguém?
É um ofício que ninguém procura, por isso não há ninguém que apareça para aprender esta arte. Um dia mais tarde, não vai haver quem lhe dê continuidade. Tenho pena, mas é a vida, não há nada a fazer…
TURMA EFA- Gostaria de deixar alguma sugestão ou algum testemunho relacionado com a sua actividade?
Acho que não tenho nada de muito sugestivo ou importante a dizer. Há tantas décadas que esta arte se tem vindo a perder que não é agora, com o desenvolvimento noutras áreas e com a procura cada vez menor destes artigos, que as coisas vão mudar. Estou resignado!
